After Holy Hell it was clear the band needed to shift gears, they couldn't keep copying their success from the past few albums.  So they decided to go in a more radio friendly alt metal route.  Simpler riffs (check out what they did in Animals), slower songs, but, it works well.

They decided to make the theme of this album climate change / environmental damage (which they explored a bit on AOGHAU).

What really stands out is how good Sam Carter sounds.  He relies less on the heavy screams of the past and centers more on a raspy shout, which complements the new sound well.  Also WAY more clean vocals (which he excels at).

A lot more focus on electronics here, check out parts like the intro to Giving Blood or Discourse is Dead.  It adds a lot of variety to the album, which is a breath of fresh air from the past couple (which were amazing, but could be a little on dimensional at times).

Overall, I think the new style works very well.  Fans were obviously mad at first but I think its been growing on them.  I do wish they'd stayed a bit heavier, Sam has some of the best screams in the business and the more he uses them the better.

On the flip side, they do get a bit heavy handed with the electronics and strings.  Dead Butterflies, while being an excellent song could have toned it down a little in the outro. Flight Without Feathers, while pleasant sounding, takes it too far.

They have quite a few guest features on this one.  Winston McCall (Parkway Drive) on Impermanence is excellent, and Simon Neil in Goliath is great.

6 green and 1 red, this is an excellent follow-up and proof the band COULD continue on without Tom.
