After listening to Anthems to death I picked up a copy of Doomsday Machine and loved it as much if not more than Anthems. I even got a 2nd copy to get signed when I saw them for the first time at The Rave. The band continues to get clearer production, which isn't a problem yet but starts to get grating on their next one.
This was one of my favorite albums for years and its still a great one.
Enter the Machine - Intro track, really sets the stage for the album. Probably their best intro track up to this point in their career
Taking Back My Soul - They're not messing around this time. Like 5 unique riffs and a solo before the vocals even kick in. Killer track, so much energy.
Nemesis - Yeah that intro riff is incredible, the post verse 1 solo. They're not messing around this time, the Amott brothers brought their best. Nemesis is one if their best known songs and its obvious why. This is a prototypical AE song, fast riffs, massive choruses and intricate solos all blended together seamlessly. When I saw them live the crowd lost their shit for Nemesis
My Apocalypse - A bit of a slower song, which is good because I wanted to learn an Arch Enemy song on guitar and this is the only one that seemed possible. Fun to play. Also a check out those electronics, adds a great atmosphere to the song. And check out that solo. Such a unique sound
Carry the Cross - That intro riff is execllent. Thr verse is meh but chorus brings it back. Pretty forgettable song
I Am Legend/Out For Blood - Back to the fast pace, furious verse riff. The chorus is good and the solo is great like usual. The ending of this one is great
Skeleton Dance - Mid paced, pretty standard song here. Nothing really exciting going on in this one.
Although, they manage to bring it around as the end to be pretty good. Kind of the theme of this album. Mid songs with good chorus and excellent outros
Hybrids of Steel - Overlong instrumental song. Loses it charm pretty quick honestly.
Mechanic God Creation - Getting back on track eith this one. Good verse riff, excellent chorus and a fun interlude guitar part. Just an overall fun song
Machtkampf - Means power struggle. Gossow is from Germany so maybe thats what's up with the German title? Either way, those pinch harmonic dives in the beginning are ridiculous, but man this song is a banger.
Slaves of Yesterday - And ending with a bang. Slaves of Yesterday is an epic song that really rounds out the album. Shows the band firing on all cylinders. Gossows vocals get unhinged in the chorus and gives it that much more bite. And of course that chunky riff is great
So 7 green songs, its a great album. No bad songs just drags a bit in the middle.
4/5
